Analysis of a Significant Residence
Daeyang House and Gallery
Steven Holl Architects
Seoul, South Korea
2012

The floor plan of this house was generated through a musical diagram called the “Symphony of Modules,’ created by Istvan Anhalt. The house divided up into three separate pavilions, all of which are connected by a horizontal datum of water in between the first and second story of the residence. Architect Steven Holl aimed to make the experience of the building as if one were standing in the middle of a piece of music in which the light is the notes and the space is the orchestra.
Section
The section can be the generator when strategically used to cut through multiple vertical spaces of a piece of architecture. It is most effectively used when showing the transition from one spatial condition to another. The section above in the case of the Daeyang Gallery and House works very effectively at showing the critical interaction that takes place when the resident ascends up the stairs towards the horizontal datum of water that connects all three pavilions.
Architectural Sequence
An architectural sequence is the choreographed order of spaces in which the Architect directs the residents through the spatial experience of the building. In respect to the Daeyang Gallery and House, the primary sequence of the building is ascending the main stair case in the center pavilion as you slowly look out over the horizon of the water and towards the mountains.
