Mass and Composition

Vertical and Horizontal Composition, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, 1928

The goal of this project was to distill the core compositional principles from a modern piece of art work and extrapolate those principles onto a 3-Dimensional medium. I was tasked with the strict guidelines of only being able to manipulate 3 faces of a 5”x5”x8.125” wooden block. The entire process of manipulating the wood block was subtractive.

The guiding compositional principles of  the artwork are the golden ratio,  horizontal and  vertical alignment and intersection, unit to whole, and the rule of thirds.

Applying the above principles on my own composition, a white plain of field was employed to highlight the small pixel voids.  The pixels then turn the corner  into the larger rectangular voids, cutting through the naturally horizontal grain of wood.  The longer voids that follow the grain of the wood intersect the larger voids to create the horizontal and vertical interaction.  The placement of the voids align to divide the composition into thirds, putting an emphasis on the untouched square space in the middle region of the thirds.
